Linkable Assets: The Page People Link To Without Being Asked
A linkable asset is a page other people link to without being asked. Everything else in link building is an attempt to compensate for not having one. The distinction matters because building an asset is a one-off cost that keeps returning, while buying placements is a recurring cost that stops the moment you stop paying. Linkable assets are what make that happen.
Still, most companies have the raw material for one and never build it.
What makes something linkable
A page earns links when linking to it saves the writer work or makes their own piece better. That is the whole test. Four qualities tend to produce it:
- First, it answers a question with a number. After all, writers need figures they can attribute. If yours is the only available figure, you get cited.
- It saves someone a task. Next, a calculator, a template or a reference table. People link because it is easier than explaining.
- Then it is the most complete version that exists. Not the best written — the most complete. In fact, completeness is what makes a writer stop looking.
- It is free and ungated. However, an email gate removes almost all of the link value. After all, nobody links their readers to a form.
Notice what is missing: being interesting. Plenty of interesting pages earn nothing because there is no reason for a writer to point at them.
The linkable assets that actually work
| Type | Effort | Earns links over | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Original data from your own operations | Medium | Years | Anyone with a database |
| An annual survey of a specific role | High | Years, and compounds | Established companies |
| A calculator or estimator | Medium | Years | Anything with a pricing question |
| A reference table, spec sheet or fit guide | Low to medium | Years | Physical products, technical fields |
| A genuinely complete guide | High | Two to three years | Complex topics nobody explains well |
| A free template or checklist | Low | Years | Any process-heavy field |
| A definition or glossary page | Low | Steady, modest | Fields full of jargon |
The low-effort rows are underrated. A well-built reference table can out-earn a six-week research project, because reference material gets linked quietly and continuously.
How to find your linkable assets
Four questions, in order:
- What number does your business already know that nobody publishes? Whatever your system records. Response times, failure rates, price movements, seasonal patterns.
- What do people in your market ask you repeatedly? If you answer the same question fifteen times a year, the definitive answer does not exist online.
- What calculation do your customers do badly? Anything worked out on a napkin is a calculator waiting to be built.
- What is the most annoying thing to look up in your field? Scattered specs, inconsistent standards, regional variations. Putting them in one table is an asset.
The answer is nearly always something you already have and assume is boring because you see it daily.
Building linkable assets that earn
Put the useful part above the fold. The number, the table, the tool. Not a preamble about your company.
Make it citable. A clear title, a date, a stated method, a way to reference it. Writers cite what is easy to cite.
Let people take the data. A download, or at least a copyable table. Restricting it prevents the citation you wanted.
Do not gate it. Every gate removes links. If you need leads from it, ask for the email after the value, not before.
Keep it current and say when you updated it. A page dated three years ago stops being cited even if the content is still right.
Give it a permanent URL. If this is annual, use a URL that does not include the year, so links accumulate on one page.
How to launch it
An asset does not earn links by existing. The first fifty links come from work.
- Pitch twenty to forty journalists who cover the subject, individually.
- Tell the people whose questions prompted it.
- Find articles that state the fact without a source, and tell those writers politely.
- Point your own paid placements at it rather than at commercial pages.
- Update it annually and pitch the change.
After the first wave, a genuine asset keeps earning on its own. That is the whole difference between building one and buying placements.
What does not work
Infographics on their own. Largely exhausted as a tactic. The data is what gets cited, not the picture of it.
Gated whitepapers. Nobody links to a form.
Ultimate guides that are only long. Length is not completeness.
Self-serving research. If every finding points at buying your product, writers spot it immediately.
Tools that need a signup to see the answer. The signup is the reason it earns nothing.
Frequently asked questions
What is a linkable asset?
A page people link to without being asked — usually original data, a tool, a reference table or a template. The test is whether linking to it helps the person linking.
How long before it earns links?
The first wave comes from pitching, within weeks. Passive links build over months and years, and that is where the value is.
How many should we have?
Two or three that genuinely work beats ten that half work. Most companies do better maintaining one properly than launching new ones.
Do calculators still work?
Yes, when they answer a question people actually ask and give the answer without a signup. Most fail on the second condition.
Can we buy links to an asset instead?
You can, and pointing placements at an asset is a better use of budget than pointing them at product pages. The asset should still be able to earn on its own, or you are just buying links with extra steps.
Linkable assets: the short version
Find the number your business already knows and nobody publishes, put it on an ungated page with the method stated, and pitch it once properly. That page will still be earning links when this quarter’s placements have been forgotten.
If you want help deciding which of your data is worth building into an asset, send a brief.
Linkable assets are the cheapest link building you will ever do, because the cost is paid once and the links keep arriving.
For the numbers behind this, see what backlinks cost. Google’s guidance on creating helpful content is the standard this work is ultimately judged against.
Build two linkable assets properly rather than ten pages nobody cites.
Linkable assets age well: a reference page updated once a year keeps earning. Audit your linkable assets annually and retire the ones nobody cites. Two strong linkable assets beat a content calendar.
